After billionaire businessmen, it is the turn of companies from India to shine on the Forbes radar with as many as 48 firms making it to a list of the world's biggest companies compiled by the US magazine.Led by India's most valued firm Reliance Industries and PSU major ONGC, all these 48 Indian firms named in the 'Global 2000 List' have a billion-dollar size in terms of market value.

Dollar stole the shine of gold across the globe and in the domestic bullion markets it was almost a free-fall in prices with Delhi recording the biggest ever drop of Rs 1,110 per 10 gram from its peak of over 13k.The metal in London fell to 905 dollars an ounce from a record 1,033 dollars.

On domestic front, the rates came down to Rs 12,000 per 10 gram in Delhi, a fall of Rs 1,110, followed by Kolkata, where it slipped by Rs 930 at Rs 12,305.In Mumbai and Chennai, the prices lost Rs 905 each at Rs 12,075 and Rs 12,175 per 10 gram respectively.Traders said panic selling emerged after reports that the metal plunged to a month-low level globally after the US dollar rallied.Bullion merchants said the market experienced a biggest fall in its history as dollar firmness diverted all financial and commodity markets.

They said the plunge in bullion came at a time when the Indian markets are passing through an off marriage season.Meanwhile, US dollar is advancing against its major rivals euro and yen in European markets. The dollar, snapping its softening trend, is gaining after the US Federal Reserve cut lending rates by 0.75 percentage.Analysts said the fall in prices is only the much-needed correction. Gold, an all-weather investment option, has been spiralling, primarily because of waning charisma in other investment options.

Oil Price are rising

Oil prices crossed the $110 a barrel mark on Wednesday for the sixth straight day of record highs.The main reason behind the rise was because the dollar fell to new lows prompting US investors to buy commodities.Prices briefly touched $110.20 before settling around $109.92 a barrel. Investors have raced into commodities over the past month to hedge against inflation and the slumping dollar.

This has sent oil prices rising despite concerns about the economic health of top oil consumer, the United States, and increasing fuel stocks.Analysts said the uptrend is not likely to die soon. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries have meanwhile decided to keep output unchanged.

The dollar set a number of new low marks against the Euro on Wednesday, attracting new buyers to the oil market.The rise is despite a 10.2 per cent rise in crude supplies since early January.Oil prices initially fell on Wednesday in New York trading after the US Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said crude supplies rose 6.2 million barrels last week, more than three times the 1.6 million barrels forecast by analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires.

But buyers quickly returned to the market.

This scheme has been in the news for some time, but RBI's latest announcement will allow ATM users to finally breath easy.

The RBI has also asked the commercial banks to reduce the transaction fee of customers, using ATMs of other Banks, to Rs 20 per transaction by March 31 and remove the same from April 1 next year.In a circular issued to the banks, the Apex Bank said this would apply to banks which were charging more than Rs 20 per transaction and they should reduce the charges to a maximum of Rs 20 per transaction irrespective of the amount of withdrawal.The circular was based on the response the Central Bank had received to the approach paper it had released in its website on December 23 last year. The service charges for the cash withdrawal transactions using credit cards and using an ATM located abroad might be determined by the banks themselves.

At the end of December, the number of ATMs deployed in India was 32,342. Commensurate with the branch network, larger banks have deployed more ATMs.Most banks prefer to deploy ATMs at locations where they have a large customer base or expect considerable use. To increase the usage of ATMs as a delivery channel, banks have also entered into bilateral or multilateral arrangements with other banks to have inter-bank ATM networks, the RBI said.

Charges levied on the customers vary from bank to bank and also vary according to the ATM network that was used for the transaction. Consequently, a customer was not aware, beforehand, of the charges that would be levied for a particular ATM transaction, while using an ATM of another bank.This generally discourages the customer from using the ATMs of other banks. March 8 is international women’s day. On the behalf women an international organization has conducted a survey how much women workers are paid. The International Trade Union Confederation report on pay equity, which focuses on the different earnings of women and men in 63 countries around the world, found the average difference between women's and men's pay is 15.6 per cent.

The report found most positive results in Europe, Oceania and Latin America, while Asia and Africa showed the biggest differences. In the Middle East country of Bahrain, women are actually paid 40 per cent more than men - perhaps because of the very low numbers of women in the workforce. And if Bahrain is excluded from the data, the global gender pay gap would be 16.5 per cent.

The report also showed that pay gap tends to be higher in female-dominated work environments such as education and health. According to the report, women tend to earn significantly less than men in the mining industry, utilities sector and the financial services sector. The study further showed that there is also a large pay difference in the not-for-profit sector and pay equality is closer in public administration and other community, social and personal services jobs. It also found that educated women are not necessarily paid wages like men. In some cases, the difference in fact rises with the level of education achieved.

In the UK and the Netherlands the gap rises with the level of education, particularly at the level of tertiary education. In the report, it was also shown that women working part-time do not automatically earn less than men, with the reverse true in most countries

The stock had shot up 10 per cent on Monday morning after Anil Ambani announced he would give bonus shares to all stockholders.

India IT market Fastened at $24.3 bln by 2011

India's information and communication technology (ICT) market is estimated to reach $24.3 billion by 2011, rising 20.3 per cent annually, an industry research firm said on Wednesday.

"This growth will be driven by chief information officers (CIOs) continuing to build and consolidate the basic IT infrastructure, in addition to small and mid-size businesses increasingly leveraging technology to drive business growth and efficiency," research firm Gartner Inc said.

Gartner said the total Indian ICT market was $9.6 billion in 2006, including hardware and software.

A worldwide survey of CIOs by Gartner has shown that average IT spend by Indian firms would rise 13 per cent in 2008 against a global average of 3.3 per cent.

"This increased spending by Indian CIOs is directed primarily towards building new business capabilities, with 30 per cent of IT spend allocated for business growth and 19 per cent towards business transformation," the firm said.

The Indian technology landscape was evolving rapidly, driven by continued growth in the offshore services sector with strong domestic growth.

Indian firms are spending more on hardware and software than on people, it added.

Chidambram view on Budget08

Indicating a Budget that could be harsh on the people, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that reactions could not be ‘kind’ enough when he presents the Union Budget on February 29.

"I have not started working on it yet. All I know that you would not be so kind to me on February 29," Chidambaram said at an awards ceremony when asked whether there would be any tax cuts in the forthcoming Budget.

Chidambaram is scheduled to present the union Budget for the next fiscal on February 29. He, however, did not clarify why the reaction would not be so kind to the Budget.

The Finance Minister said the year 2007 has been good for everyone, including tax collectors. "I hope 2008 will be better," he said.

Answering a question by his wife whether any service tax would be levied on lawyers, Chidambaram said in a lighter vein, "No one believes that lawyers render any services. So there cannot be any service tax on lawyers."

On queries whether he was worried about the volatility in the stock market, Chidambaram said, "I am not worried about market going up and down."

After being conferred the award, Chidambaram said, "I know that politics is a very different and difficult vocation. Yet if so many are (there) in politics, it is because at the end of the day, we believe that something can be achieved through politics."

"Politics is not about individual achievements or collective achievements, politics is about bringing everything together so that we can make a great country," he said.

"I am quite proud to be in politics and proud to be called a politician".
